The 7th General Conference of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW) this morning kicked off at the headquarters of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in Rabat, Kingdom of Morocco, in the presence of more than 120 rectors of Member Universities, representatives of various organizations, federations, Islamic and international institutions, many Islamic countries’ ambassadors to the Kingdom of Morocco, and representatives of local and international media.
Taking the floor at the opening session were Dr Suliman bin Abdullah bin Hamoud Aba Al-Khail, Rector of Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, President of the Federation’s 6th General Conference, Chairman of the Executive Council; Dr Jamila El Mossali, Acting Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Executive Training of the Kingdom of Morocco; and Dr Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, ISESCO Director General, ex-officio FUIW Secretary General.
At close of the opening session, the document officilizing the accession of the Republic of Turkey to ISESCO was signed and many tribute shields offered. Besides, the 2016 FUIW Prize was awarded, cooperation agreements between the universities participating in the TAFAHUM Programme for Student Exchange handed, and an ISESCO-UNDP cooperation agreement was signed.
As part of its agenda, the Conference will discuss the Report of the Federation’s Executive Council; the Secretary General’s Report on the Federation’s General Secretariat Activities between the 6th and 7th General Conference Sessions and the Secretary General’s Financial Report on and Study of the Financial Situation for the Years 2013-2015. The Conference will also examine the Draft Action Plan and Budget for 2016-2018, the Project of “Integrated Programme for Strengthening Exchange and Cooperation among Member Universities”, Project of “Performance Measurement Mechanism for the Universities of the Islamic World and its Implementation Road Map” and Project of “the Islamic World Observatory of Science, Technology and Innovation”.
In addition, the Conference will consider the draft amendments to the FUIW Charter, its Executive Council’s Rules of Procedure and the Federation’s Financial Regulations. In the meantime, it will elect the Executive Council Members for 2017-2019 and endorse the appointment of the FUIW Secretary General and the list of the Islamic world universities and higher institutes having joined the Federation between the 6th and 7th Sessions of the Conference. On the second day of the Conference, two roundtables will be organized on the themes “Cooperation and Partnership for Developing Joint University Action” and “Financial Sustainability and University Institutional Performance”.
Established in 1987, the ISESCO-affiliated Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW) is so far made up of 314 members, essentially universities and higher institutes.
